Best Drone for 10 Year Old With Camera

Introduction to Drones and How-to for Parents and Children

Drones have taken the world by storm. And it’s no surprise why: drones can be a lot of fun! They’re also educational, exciting, and will help kids with their STEM skillset (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). For those who aren’t familiar with the term ‘drone’, it’s “a small unmanned aircraft that is guided remotely by an operator on the ground.”

Drones, like cars and other tech toys, are usually considered to be ‘boys’ toys’. But girls can have just as much fun with them! If you’re thinking about buying a drone for your child or children, but aren’t sure if they have the correct aptitude to understand how it works, I’ll go over some of the basics about drones and how to fly them so you can determine whether your child is able.

Drones at a glance

To begin with, there are six critical components that make up a drone including the:

Battery

The battery stores the energy required for a drone to function.

Radio Control Unit

This is also known as a transmitter, and it sends signals from the remote control to the drone in order for it to be navigated.

Propeller

Each propeller powers a motor in a specific direction so that the drone may be maneuvered.

Motors

Each motor is attached to a propeller and propels the drone as commanded by the control unit.

Electronic Speed Controllers (ESC)

The ESCs regulates the power supply from the battery so that each motor has an appropriate amount of energy supplied to it, allowing for smooth operation.

Flight Controller

The flight controller is what helps a drone maintain its current height and position, and it communicates with the remote control so your child knows where their drone is in space.

Prop Guards

Prop guards are plastic or metal cages that surround each propeller to protect people in case of accidental contact with one.

The transmitter also has two joysticks: the left joystick controls the altitude (up and down) and orientation (left and right), while the right joystick controls forward and backward movement. With this information, you can determine whether your child is ready to operate a drone or not.

If they can work a video game controller, they’ll likely be able to navigate a drone with no problem.

How To Fly A Drone And Three Types Of Drones?

There are primarily three types of control for drones:

  1. Fixed-wing
  2. Multi-rotor
  3. Single Rotor

The type of drone your child will be flying is dependent on their experience level as well as yours. Generally speaking, young children should start with flying a fixed-wing drone, while older children and adults should start with a multi-rotor. If you’re a novice flyer as well, I’d recommend starting with a fixed-wing.

Fixed Wing Drones

Flying a fixed-wing drone is very similar to how you fly an airplane. This type of control requires more practice because there’s no self-leveling, so if you move the left joystick too much in one direction, your drone will flip over. However, if you can successfully control a fixed-wing, it’s easier to fly a multi-rotor because the orientation of the craft is irrelevant.

Multi-Rotor Drones

Flying a multi-rotor may seem complicated at first glance, but it’s actually very simple. If you tilt the left joystick forward, the drone goes forward. Tilt it backward, and your drone stops or goes in reverse. The right joystick controls the height and rotation of the craft.

Single Rotor Drones

The final type of control is called ‘mode-1’ or ‘manual mode’, which is what you use if you have a single rotor control. This requires the most practice because it’s just like controlling the drone with your hands, except it’s more difficult because you’re using one joystick instead of two. For example, to make your drone go forward in mode-1, you actually push the right joystick away from you; this gets easier after some practice.

Propeller Guards: Your Child’s Best Friend And Worst Enemy

Before you can let them fly a drone, they’ll need to get used to the controls. But before they even take off, there are other things you should teach them about first. One is how propellers work because any novice flyer will discover the hard way that propellers can cut up anything they come into contact with, including people.

For this reason, propeller guards are an absolute necessity for novice pilots under the age of 14. However, it may be in your best interest to teach them how they work so that they understand how dangerous they can be when flying near others or if their drone crashes.

Flying a drone is an amazing experience for any child, so don’t let the fear of crashing prevent them from trying it. A good way to get around this problem is to teach them how propellers work so they can be fully prepared when flying their new toy.

When your child starts learning how to fly a drone, some very important lessons are learned. They’ll gain an understanding of physics that will help them later in life, as well as how to follow instructions and fly something through 3D space.

The next time your child wants to play video games, you may discover they want to do something else first. And if you never could have imagined playing a game of catch with your child involving a drone, you may soon find yourself doing just that.
